💡 Big Ideas:
1. Experience has been the best teacher for me over the last 5 months.
2. There are 5 ideas brought on by experience: challenging oneself, accepting one’s strengths, going with your gut, doing good word, and keeping your word.
3. Spend more time focusing on what you learned vs. what you lost.
“Focusing on the wrong thing.”
There I was sitting in the airport, waiting for my flight, drinking coffee, and feeling like I made a big mistake. How could I be so stupid? Why didn’t I think this through?
It was then I realized I was focusing on the wrong thing.
Time to look at what I learned versus what I lost.
“It’s been 5 months.”
Today I’m going to talk about what the last 5 months has taught me.
This newsletter is definitely not the typical newsletter you would receive from me on a Saturday morning.
In fact, you haven’t received an email from me in nearly 5 months.
The truth is, as they say, “life was lifing”.
In a good way of course.
My acceptance of a Chief Operating Officer position at a startup, my wife and I transitioning into becoming empty nesters, me getting more serious about my health, and so on and so on.
Like I said, life was lifing.
However, I knew I missed sharing some of my insights on artist management, artist development, and the music industry as a whole with you.
So, if you’re still with me, time to pick up where we left off.
"Experience can be the best teacher.”
Experience gives us some great insight into who we are.
With over 3 decades in the music industry, even I know there is more to learn. When you accept that, you find it is easier to move forward, to pivot when necessary, and most of all, to be flexible.
The last 5 months confirmed 5 things for me:
1. Challenging yourself is worth it
2. Accept your strengths
3. Go with your gut
4. Do good work
5. Always keep your word
The above 5 things may seem like the norm. However, new environments often present new contexts for things we take for granted.
Let me give you some insight into each one:
#1: “Challenging yourself is worth it.”
Challenges often show us what we’re made of.
Stepping out of your comfort zone is always difficult. Running from who you are and what you know you’re capable of is the beginning of failure.
Embracing who you are in challenging moments is what leads to growth.
#2: “Accept your strengths.”
You never know how strong you are if you focus on your weaknesses.
No one can successfully run a business, manage an artist, develop a tech product, etc., without accepting the areas where they are strong.
Accepting your strengths and building on them is what fuels your confidence.
#3: “Go with your gut.”
Believing and knowing your right is what separates you.
Most people are afraid to stand on what they believe and know is right. They are more afraid of being wrong. You cannot care more about what people think vs. knowing what’s right.
Go with your gut. Trust your instincts. Accept the outcome.
#4: “Do good work.”
Most people don’t like to work.
The most impactful work is the groundwork. This work is always the work that feels the most boring and time-consuming. However, this work separates you from the other 95% wanting to succeed.
Commit to doing good work and the impact will be seen and felt.
#5: “Always keep your word.”
This is easier said than done.
Oftentimes, this is challenged because we are trying to stand by things we cannot control. Focus on the things within your control. It will give you the ability to deliver on what you promised.
Having control will always empower and enable you to keep your word.
